Founded in 2000, the Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI) is a nonprofit scientific association devoted to understanding of the mechanisms underlying thoughts and intelligent behaviour and their emulation in machines. SLAAI operated as the Artificial Intelligence Research group in Sri Lanka (AIRLK) for 3 years before its formal establishment in 2000. SLAAI membership represents both academia and industry in the country. The primary objectives of SLAAI are to increase public awareness of Artificial Intelligence, improve teaching and research in AI, and also promote industry academia partnership in the use for AI techniques for real world problem solving. Major SLAAI activities include conduct of AI publicity programmes, offering of short courses in areas of AI, promote research in AI, and conduct an annual AI conference and publishing of proceedings.

First International Conference on Emerging Trends in AI (ICETAI) was held on 29th of December 2015 at the Open University of Sri Lanka. The annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI) have been held for 11 consecutive years and in 2015, The Department of Electrical and Computer engineering together with the SLAAI organized an International Conference in place of Annual sessions.

The Keynote speech on The Impact of AI within Global Industry was delivered by Dr. Romesh Ranawana, Co-Founder and Managing Director of SimCentric Technologies. Dr. Upali Kohomban, Head of Research, CodeGen International (Pvt) Ltd., delivered the Invited Speech on “AI for Masses –What’s in It for Us?”. Seven research paper presentations were done by post graduate and undergraduate students from various universities which had been reviewed and accepted for presentation. Many invitees from other Universities, software industry and a large number of OUSL undergraduates participated the event.
This was a great opportunity for the researches in Artificial Intelligence including postgraduates and undergraduate students to present their research work.
SLAAI annual conference 2015
The annual conference of the Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI) will be held on 29th of December 2015 at the Open University of Sri Lanka, for the 12th consecutive year. The program includes presentations of undergraduate and postgraduate research, guest lectures, and demonstrations of projects. This is a great opportunity for the researches in AI including students and industry personals as they can receive expert comments during the review process and as well as at the presentations. In addition, SLAAI conference is a path to link academia and the industry.
A Big Data workshop
A workshop on Big Data, Business Intelligence & Data Mining was successfully conducted at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. Around 50 students participated the event and Microsoft sponsored the gift items to the participants. Dinesh Asanka conducted the workshop.
Colombo Artificial Intelligence Meetup
Inaugural Colombo Artificial Intelligence Meetup was successfully held on 13th November 2015, at Virtusa Auditorium in Orion City, Dematagoda. Over last six decades Artificial Intelligence techniques have shown unique capacity to solve various complex real world problems thus increasing the penetration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques into wide spectrum of subject areas. The challenge is to bring the opportunities of AI for the parties who are interested in harnessing the power of AI.
Therefore, a meetup was successfully conducted with the participation of excellent contributors from SLLAI, Virtusa, CodeGen and University of Moratuwa.The event was organized by SLAAI with sponsorship from Virtusa.This meetup is for all researchers, industry experts, academics, students and enthusiasts who are passionate about this astounding field.
